Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and is transmitted to humans by deer ticks. Symptoms of Lyme disease vary and can manifest themselves in different ways, which can sometimes make diagnosis difficult.
In the early stages of infection, symptoms can be flu-like, with fatigue, chills, fever and muscle or joint pain. A circular rash called erythema migrans, which resembles a target, may also appear around the tick bite.
If left untreated, the disease can progress to more serious symptoms. These can include severe joint pain, neurological problems, persistent fatigue, heart problems and impaired vision.
The importance of self-assessment
Because of the variety of symptoms, it can be useful to have a tool that helps people recognize the possible signs of Lyme disease. That’s where our self-assessment tool comes in.
Our self-assessment questionnaire includes 15 questions covering a range of symptoms commonly associated with Lyme disease. For each question, you can select the answer that best fits your situation.
Each answer is associated with a number of points, which are then added together to give an overall score. This score can help you determine whether you should seek medical advice.
